A beautiful lawn is something most keen gardeners aspire to, but it can be a challenge during the summer when the temperatures soar. Do your lawn a favour and follow these guidelines, you’ll be the envy of your neighbours!
Keep it Cool
Mowing is stressful for your lawn and it takes a day or two to recover. Freshly cut grass will benefit from being in the shade as long as possible, so mow late in the day or early evening.
Keep it Long
Try not to cut more than 1/3 of the grass blades. If you cut too low, you run the risk of exposing new growth and the root system, negatively impacting the look of your lawn. Ideally, grass length should be at least 5cm in the cooler months and 7cm in the summer, for maximum protection to developing shoots.
Be Water Wise
If you are an early bird, watering before the heat of the day is great. Early evening is also great in the warmer months. The trick is to water down to the roots, but not let the lawn be sodden overnight, which can encourage fungus. Watering in the middle of the day encourages rapid evaporation and also contravenes local water wise rules, so make sure you only water before 10am and after 4pm if you are not on tank water.
